Overview
I was brought in as an external design consultant to lead the UX/UI for VCFC's new mobile banking platform. VCFC is part of the Insignia Group, which has been serving ultra-high-net-worth individuals since 1996. They needed to replace an outdated card management app with something much more ambitious: multi-currency accounts, international payments, premium card management, and integrated concierge services. And we had four months to ship it.
As the lead on a four-person team, I owned the end-to-end design while keeping stakeholders aligned between the board in Malta, a distributed design team, and engineering partners across time zones. I also brought AI into our workflow early on, using Claude for rapid concept exploration and Claude Code to build functional prototypes that became central to how we communicated with stakeholders and developers.

The Turning Point
The first round of concepts leaned feature-dense. Basically Revolut with a premium skin. The board rejected them right away. And honestly, that wasn't a UX failure. It was a listening failure. So I restructured our research phase: direct interviews with the CEO and board members, followed by rapid concept cycles where I used Claude to generate wireframe variations overnight. That let us test multiple directions in days instead of weeks.
This AI-assisted exploration meant I could walk into the next stakeholder review with six distinct directions instead of two, each one grounded in the feedback we'd actually received. The board picked the restrained, trust-first approach. Without AI tooling compressing our ideation timeline, we wouldn't have had the breathing room to find the right answer within a four-month window.

The Challenge
Coming in as an external consultant added a real layer of complexity. I had no pre-existing relationships with the board or the engineering team. I needed to build credibility fast while simultaneously getting my head around a regulated financial product, a luxury brand with 30 years of heritage, and the expectations of ultra-high-net-worth users.
On the product side, the app needed to support 64+ currencies, international transfers, premium card controls for VISA Infinite and Mastercard World Elite, and integrated lifestyle concierge, all built to MFSA regulatory standards. The four-month deadline meant every week counted. And I was coordinating between a board in Malta, two designers I was mentoring, a PM, and engineering partners working across different time zones.
Process & AI Workflow
I structured the project into tight two-week sprints and front-loaded stakeholder alignment so the team could execute with confidence. For ideation, I used Claude to rapidly explore layout concepts and copy variations, which meant I could present multiple directions in stakeholder reviews instead of defending a single bet. For developer communication, I built interactive prototypes using Claude Code. These were functional HTML and CSS builds that showed exactly how transitions, micro-interactions, and responsive behaviour should work. They replaced static handoff specs and cut out a lot of ambiguity.
The design system itself prioritised restraint: list-based navigation, generous whitespace, and typography that projected institutional confidence. I mentored the junior designer through component creation while the senior designer owned the card management and experiences sections. Usability testing confirmed our direction. Users responded to clarity over complexity every time.
Results & Reflection
The app launched on time within the four-month window. Multi-currency transactions, lifestyle services, premium card management, and robust security all shipped at quality. VCFC's digital transformation has since been covered across fintech press, and the platform continues to grow.
Integrating AI into the design workflow wasn't about replacing craft. It was about compressing the exploration phase so we could spend more time on the decisions that actually mattered. Claude handled wireframe generation and copy exploration. Claude Code produced functional prototypes that became our shared language with developers. The result was fewer misunderstandings, faster alignment, and a much higher-fidelity conversation with stakeholders at every stage.
